Turner, Chapter President I hope you are making plans for a vacation this summer somewhere grand. Some of our colleague’s have just been to New Zealand, Hawaii, and Europe. The world has a lot of interesting places to visit and explore, so don’t let the grass grow under your feet before you put one foot in front of the other and get out there and enjoy those new adventures! Remember what your priorities are! As I write this message the Annual AEP Conference is in Shell Beach on the beautiful California Coast this next week. I will have more to report in the next Newsletter. I hope to see many of you there. The program is great and we have some international guest speakers who will talk about environmental issues from a different perspective. I will be presenting this year’s Award’s program. Of interest, I will present an Appreciation Award to our own Nancy Ferguson. Nancy has been the Environmental Monitor Editor in Chief for many years. She has made the EM a quality magazine for AEP. She has worked very hard to produce great articles provided from the membership and others. She recently stepped down from this post and will be recognized for her good work over the years. We all thank you Nancy for all you have done for AEP. Well done! I will report more next month on the Award winners. The Inland Empire membership continues to grow. We had 140 members last year. Today we have 150 members! We have such great opportunities in AEP and as a Chapter to network with our colleagues and learn new things that will help us in our daily work and lives. Keep up the good work, get the word out, and share our fun and reasons for being an AEP member. I challenge each of you to invite your “nonmember” friends to join AEP. Find out what we have to offer and see why it is worth the time and money to be a member. We know it is! We are always looking forward to meeting new members that come on board. We have a goal this year to increase our membership by 10%. I challenge each of you to help us realize this goal. Talk to your friends and colleagues. We are all ambassadors of our profession. Look below for some of the member benefits. Anyone who wants to become a member can complete the membership application in this Field Report, or call Freddie Olmos, our great VP for Membership. He always likes hearing from our current and prospective members. Give him a call at (909) 7070046, or send him a note to folmos@ecorpconsulting.com. This is a very good time to be a member of our profession. The Inland Empire Chapter AEP members serve everyone in our community. Think of it, each professional works for a consulting firm, a public agency, a business, or an educational institution. Who are the professionals that make up this organization? They are archaeologists, biologists, botanists, environmental scientists, geologists, geohydrologists, hydrologists, transportation planners, urban planners, landscape architects, and other important related fields. Check out the web site for member benefits. We offer Education and Training, Networking and Communication, establish Professional Standards, we have a great WEB Site! The website is changing. AEP has hired a consultant to manage the site and update it to meet AEP’s needs. Check it out at www.califaep.org. The AEP and IECAEP web sites contain a lot of very good information. Check in and learn a lot. As environmental professionals we can shape its structure to meet our needs. Access it, use it, and offer comment to the Webmaster Dev Vrat devvrat@califaep.org . Enjoy. I invite you to participate in the development and implementation processes for these programs. How can you do this? Contact your Board members to discuss your thoughts and concerns. The more active we all are the better our organization (AEP) will be. Call me or write a note to rwturner@hotmail.com if you would like to discuss or work on these programs President Report · Director Report · Membership News · Secretary Notes Director’s Report, Michael Hendrix With all the activities that occur each spring including our chapter programs, the Spring CEQA Update, the latest addition of AEP’s CEQA Guidelines that was distributed in March, and our State Conference in April, this time of year is normally a busy season for AEP and a great time to take advantage of membership benefits. But this was especially busy for the Inland Empire Chapter. The new 2006 AEP Membership Directory will be coming to you this month May. In addition, our chapter will be hosting program on controversial issues associated with SB-18 on May 10th. The Inland Empire Chapter will also provide a great new full day workshop in June on two issues of critical importance in the Inland Empire. The morning session will focus on the latest stormwater and water quality requirements for development projects, followed after lunch with a half day workshop on implementation of Western Riverside MSHCP. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided during the program so you can stay the whole day and not miss anything. In other news the AEP State Board met in Newport Beach on Sunday, April 9th. One primary focus of the meeting was finalizing changes to the AEP By-laws for consistency with the recent AEP/NAEP affiliation agreement. This topic was extremely contentious and required careful wording in order to fulfill the obligations of the agreement without jeopardizing the freedom each AEP member has to either take advantage of the affiliation by joining NEAP or keep their status as an AEP member without any obligation to join NEAP. AEP absorbed the California Chapter of NEAP including all of its membership. After all was said and done, we finally have amended AEP By-laws that accomplish these things. The biennial AEP Chapter Summit will be held in Walnut Creek on August 5, 2006. The AEP Chapter Summit is a joint conference including both local Chapter and State Board members. Past Summits have proven valuable in building relationships between the various chapters and in some cases has resulted in several chapters collaborating on programs together. This year the Summit will include professional leadership training to chapter officers provided by a professional management consultant. Chapter members can expect the quality and organization of chapter programs and services to increase as a result of this summit and the training.
The programs, services, NEAP affiliation, and professional training listed above are just a few of the things your Inland Empire Chapter and the State Board are doing to implement our goals of leadership development, membership services, education and training to its members.
President Report · Director Report · Membership News · Secretary Notes Membership News Jesus “Freddie” Olmos, V/P Membership The Inland Empire Chapter of AEP is up to 143 total members as of June 20, 2006. Thanks to everyone for their continued support of this association. AEP is member-driven, so your involvement and input is key to it’s success. We have had a great first half of the year and I’m looking forward to the rest of it. There are still several good programs planned for the remainder of the year. Don’t forget to invite a colleague or anyone else you think may be interested in what AEP has to offer. You never know, they may just join! Keep safe this summer and I look forward to seeing you all at our next program. President Report · Director Report · Membership News · Secretary Notes
Secretary’s
Notes Marc Gross Since the June Program was canceled, the IEC-AEP board met on June 12, 2006, at the Mexicali restaurant in Riverside. There are still many important topics scheduled for the remainder of 2006. In July, look for our joint program with fellow Orange County and Los Angeles County Chapter members of the AEP to receive an update from the Air Quality Management District (AQMD) regarding air quality regulations, the update of the Air Quality Handbook and the URBEMIS model. The program will be held at the AQMD district offices in Diamond Bar. (Additional information and location of the program is included within this newsletter). In August, the Board will be rescheduling a workshop, this time on the Waters of the U.S. / Wetland Delineation as well as the Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan for Riverside County. In September, the Board will be planning a program to one of our local wineries in the Inland Empire for our annual wine history and tasting event. Also, be sure to keep your eyes out for information on the CEQA 101 Workshop in October and our local AEP annual awards presentation banquet in November. In conclusion, an Inland Empire environmental professional without IEC-AEP is like cookies without milk. They each go hand in hand. Therefore, if you know of an environmental professional that is not currently a member of IEC-AEP, we encourage you to invite them to a monthly meeting. You may even want to stop by and attend a board meeting to see what exciting programs are being planned for the future. We sincerely hope to see you at one of our upcoming monthly events! As we continue to work hard in providing topics that are pertinent and cutting edge to the membership, we sincerely hope that the IEC-AEP is meeting your environmental needs. Please feel free to contact any of the board members found in this newsletter for more information on upcoming programs or the general business of the IEC-AEP.
