I am thankful that our environmental industry continues to thrive as everyone I talk to in both the public and private sectors always seems to be very busy with lots of projects to manage. I am glad that the NAEP on the chapter, state, and now national levels provide us professional support, training, and networking/social opportunities to help balance the demands of our jobs. As a new NAEP member, I just received my first copy of the Environmental Practice journal that is a fine complement to the AEP Environmental Monitor.

I look forward to becoming more "national" in my view and with networking opportunities in the environmental profession. I welcome anyone interested in becoming involved in the leadership structure of the Channel Counties Chapter to help with implementation of our charge to provide services to our members.

Please contact me directly if you are interested in leadership opportunities in our chapter as we are now in the planning stages of hosting the 2007 CalAEP Statewide Conference in Santa Barbara. I would like to extend a big thanks to Greg Ainsworth, Impact Sciences, for his hard work as newsletter editor. Greg facilitated the new look of the Channel, and created partnerships with graphic artists and printers to reduce our production and mailing costs. Greg will remain co-representative for Ventura County programs as he passes the baton to Judith Charles, Tetra Tech, who has agreed to become our Newsletter Editor. Judy will be assisted by Tatiana Inouye, Aspen Environmental, who agreed to help out with editing and production duties, Amelie Charnaux and Jessica Viramontes of Cal Poly, and Lori Baker with the County of Santa Barbara. A big thanks to our newsletter team! As always, we welcome articles and input from our members for our quarterly newsletter. Please send them directly to Judy at judith.charles@tetratech.com for our next newsletter in June.

The Channel Counties Chapter has been a leader in AEP for our programs to promote student involvement in the environmental profession. It is great to see that the San Diego Chapter has assisted San Diego State University in establishing a student chapter. Congratulations! I hope this takes off throughout the state. In order to keep our student scholarship program thriving, we will be contacting our membership to participate in the 2006 annual subscription to support the students in the Cal Poly and UCSB Bren School student chapters.

The State Conference is just around the corner in Newport Beach. The organizing committee has done a great job in making it a diverse and exciting conference. I look forward to the awards cruise! In closing, I would like to extend thanks to you, our membership, for continued support of our programs and professional organization. Hope to see you all in Newport Beach.

Spring is a busy season for AEP, and a great time for members to take advantage of all that AEP has to offer. With a very successful Spring CEQA Update Workshop under our belts, we are focusing our energies on the upcoming State Conference in Newport Beach, from April 9 to April 12, 2006. As usual, the annual State Conference offers a diverse conference program including a variety of relevant and informative sessions, engaging speakers, and numerous opportunities to socialize with your colleagues in the environmental and planning fields.

Once summer begins, the focus will shift to the biennial AEP Chapter Summit, which will be held in Walnut Creek on August 5, 2006. The AEP Chapter Summit is a joint conference including both local Chapter and State Board members. Past Summits have proven to be a valuable experience in building relationships among board members and functional officers such as treasurers, newsletter editors, events coordinators, etc. This year the State Board offers an additional thank you to AEP board members in the form of professional leadership training provided by a professional management consultant.

The programs mentioned above are just a few avenues that the State Board is utilizing in order to continue implementing our goals of leadership development, membership services, and education and training. If you have any suggestions on programs that you would like to see implemented statewide, please do not hesitate to contact me. As always, your continued participation in AEP is encouraged and welcomed.
